javaani jaan-e-man haseen dilrubaa

on a typically hot summer year 1982 afternoon in ranchi, [then] bihar, two class xii students were standing by the roadside wanting to get home. they had given up trying to get into one of the overcrowded city buses - buses where people not only are crammed like sardines inside but they also envelope the bus (side, back and top - sparing the windshield, thankfully) like bees envelope a hive.

now, having waited for some time for an empty auto or relatively empty bus, the boys were resigned to a long (to them) walk home in the heat and dust, about 3 km, give or take a km.

just for fun, they tried to thumb for a ride home. This being 1980s india, not many people owned scooters, let alone cars, so they were few and far between. there was the odd office vehicle/van/minibus that passed by but that day they did not stop either (on other occasions, the boys had managed to get a ride in such a van or minibus).

after a short time (before the boys decided to resume walking), a white car with tinted windows rolled to a stop just in front of them and the gentleman driving the car asked them to hop in. though the geeta/sanjay chopra incident had recently taken place in the country's capital, the boys had no hesitation in hopping in. then they heard a voice: "i want to kill you ... i will kill you". fortunately, it was just part of the soundtrack, and the song was this one.

to this day, i remember the cool air cnditionaed car and that music-filled ride home that rahul (not his real name) and i got that hot sultry afternoon.
