mere nainaa saavan bhaado, phir bhii meraa man pyaasaa

eons ago, as a student in primary school in berhampur, orissa, my family were close friends with another family from our native state. there was a girl my age in that family. this girl, let's call her veena (not her real name), was my best friend at that time.

our families used to travel for picnics together. i vividly remember a trip to a place called mahurikaluwa (if i remember the name right), when it had rained cats and dogs on our picnic. other trips we went to together included trips to tapta pani, taratarini, gopalpur on sea, simhachalam etc... but i digress.

the incident i want to refer to occurred when we went on a picnic trip to lake chilka (now referred to as lake chilika). i suspect the lake's real name is 'chhilka', i.e., a peel, referring to it as a slice of the bay of bengal. sorry, but i am digressing yet again.

we had gone on a boating trip on the lake and had a fun time near balugaon, rumbha and humma (don't remember the place names very well, but it was one or more of these). anyway, after the trip, when we were returning to berhampur, we played cards for some time as a pastime, because the passenger train was due to reach Berhampur only later at night.

when we both got bored of cards, veena said, 'let me tell you a movie story' and told me the entire story of the movie "mehbooba." while i was not into movies then (or - for that matter - now), i did remember that movie as having one of my favourite songs of the time (mere nainaa saavan bhaado). veena did an excellent job of narration, especially the part where rajesh khanna is reborn and sees a shadowy form (of hema malini) moving about the palace singing this song.

i finally got to watch mehbooba a few years ago, and - obviously - took me back all these years to that trip on the south eastern railway, between khurda road and berhampur, when i first heard the story of this movie. and everytime i remember this song, i remember veena and that trip! old memories are rekindled, and i then wonder where veena is now, but you see, that is a different blog of mine, one that i am yet to start writing. for now, please enjoy the song.
